Remix vs GDevelop
GDevelop is a full open-source game engine with an AI agent. Pick it to learn game making and ship to Steam or the app stores under your own name. Remix is faster from idea to a game people play, but it is not an engine.
The Short Answer
Pick Remix If You…
- want to turn an idea into a game people can play on their phones today
- want players, not just a file, and like the idea of a feed that shows your game to them
- want multiplayer, leaderboards and saves without running a server
Pick GDevelop If You…
- want to learn game making and own a project you can ship to Steam or the app stores
- want AI help with mechanics but full control in a visual editor
- teach a class and want an education plan

How They Differ
GDevelop is an engine. You get a scene editor, visual events, an asset store and exports to nearly every platform. Its AI agent helps inside that editor, and you stay in control of every object. It does not generate art or sound.
Remix starts from the other end. You describe the game and play a first version, then change it by talking to Remix AI. Publishing puts it in front of players on the web and in the Remix apps, with leaderboards, saves and rooms already wired up.
Which to Pick
If you want to learn how games are built, or plan a bigger project you will sell on Steam, GDevelop is the better choice. If you want to try an idea today and see whether people play it, start on Remix.
What GDevelop Does Better
- Open source, with exports to the web, Android, iOS, Windows, macOS and Linux.
- A full visual editor: you keep editing what the AI built by hand, and the agent sees your whole project.
- Games ship to Steam, the App Store, Google Play, Poki, CrazyGames and itch.io.
- Multiplayer lobbies, leaderboards and player accounts are built in.
- An education plan and dashboard for classes.
Where Remix Falls Short
- Building a new game with Remix AI needs a paid plan. Free accounts can plan a game, or build one with their own AI coding tools and publish it free.
- Games are web games. There is no export to Steam, consoles or a standalone app store listing of your own.
- Remix is not a full game engine. There is no scene editor or visual scripting, so large projects are easier in an engine.
- The Remix audience is smaller than the biggest platforms such as Roblox.
Questions
- Can GDevelop make a game from one prompt?
- Not quite. GDevelop's own blog says its agent is not an instant whole-game button. It builds mechanics, scenes and events inside a project.
- Can I publish to Steam or the app stores?
- With GDevelop, yes. With Remix, games publish to remix.gg, the Remix phone apps and Remix Desktop, not to your own store listing.
- Do I need to code?
- Neither needs code. GDevelop uses visual events, with JavaScript if you want it. Remix builds from a chat, and you can open the code in Remix Desktop.

Try Remix With Your Own Idea
Describe a game, play it, and publish it to the web and the Remix apps.
